LCA Members Release “A Guide for the Perplexed Part II: The Amended Google-Michigan Agreement”

June 12, 2009 – LCA members publish a summary, by Jonathan Band, of the amendment between Google and the University of Michigan that expanded the 2004 agreement, which allowed Google to scan books in the Michigan library for inclusion in Google’s search database.

LCA Submits Statement of Principles to WIPO

On May 25, 2009, the Library Copyright Association, the Electronic Information for Libraries, and the International Federation of Library Associations and Institutions submitted a Statement of Principles on copyright limitations and exceptions for libraries and archives to the WIPO Standing Committee on Copyright and Related Rights in Geneva.

LCA Testifies Regarding DMCA Section 1201

On May 6, 2009, Jonathan Band testified on behalf of LCA on renewal and expansion of the film clip compilation exemption to the DMCA Section 1201 prohibition on circumvention of access control technologies.

LCA Members File Comments on Proposed Google Library Project Settlement

May 4, 2009 – The American Library Association, the Association of College and Research Libraries, and the Association of Research Libraries (the Library Associations) file comments to explain their concerns with the Google Library Project Settlement and how the Court’s oversight can ameliorate those concerns.

LCA Submits Comments to the Copyright Office on the Visually Disabled

On April 28, 2009, the Library Copyright Alliance submitted comments in response to the Notice of Inquiry (NOI) published by the Copyright Office in the Federal Register on March 25, 2009, on the topic of facilitating access to copyrighted works for the blind or persons with other disabilities.

ALA and ARL Submit Letter to President on Future Appointments

On April 2, 2009, members of the Library Copyright Alliance joined public interest groups, library associations, and trade associations to urge President Obama to increase the balance in appointments to intellectual property policy positions and to create offices devoted to promoting innovation and free expression within the relevant agencies.

ALA and ARL Write Letter Urging Denial of CNN v. Cablevision

On March 17, 2009, the American Library Association and the Association of Research Libraries joined other nonprofits and industry associations in voicing support for the Solicitor General in advising the Supreme court against granting certiorari in the case of CNN v. Cablevision.

LCA Submits Reply on Exemptions to DMCA Section 1201

On February 2, 2009, the LCA and Music Library Association submitted comments in support of the renewal and modest broadening of the existing exemption for film clip compilations in two related ways: works included in any college or library, and works used in classrooms by instructors in all subjects.

In December 2008, members of the Library Copyright Alliance joined other organizations in releasing a set of agenda items to urge the Administration to safeguard the copyright balance and protect the right to innovate in order to ensure the vitality of the information-driven economy.

LCA Creates A Pro-Library Copyright Agenda

In December 2008, the Library Copyright Alliance released a set of agenda items focused on the goals of LCA in regard to copyright issues that have a significant effect on the services libraries provide to their users, as well as fostering global access to information for creative, research, and educational uses.
